Frequently Asked Questions – Tour Bookings

Q: Do you charge a booking fee?

A: No, we don’t charge a booking fee or a markup on these individual tours. The price you pay is the same as if you booked directly through the tour companies.

Q: Can you answer my questions? What if I need more help?

We can answer basic questions as part of our help booking individual tours, but if you need more help, we recommend doing our full Tour Booking Service.

Q: Is tax included?

A: Tax will be added to your order when you check out. Costa Rica’s VAT (Value Added Tax) is 13%.

Q: Do I really need to book tours in advance or can I just do it when I arrive?

A: We highly recommend booking anything you know you want to do in advance. Arranging activities last minute in Costa Rica is not always easy. Hotel concierges aren’t always knowledgeable about specific tours, and tour companies can be slow to get back to you.

It’s always better to spend your time enjoying your vacation rather than planning it while you’re here! Plus, if you wait to book, the best tour companies could be full or have limited time slots available.

Q: How far in advance should I book my tour?

A: We recommend booking at least two weeks before your trip; however, we can usually accommodate bookings with at least two days’ notice. Popular tours can sell out so keep that in mind.

For Christmas/New Years and Easter travel, we recommend booking at least one month beforehand.

If you have a large group (8 or more people), it’s best to book at least a couple of months in advance.

We do not book tours more than six months in advance in case your plans change or the tour price changes.

Q: I am trying to book for tomorrow or the next day. Why isn’t the calendar letting me select that date?

A: Those dates are blocked off. We need at least two days’ notice to make the arrangements with the tour company, collect your payment, and then pay the tour company.

Q: Are you operating the tour?

A: No, we are a travel agency that works with tour companies in Costa Rica that will provide the service to you.

Q: How do you choose the tour companies you work with?

A: We choose companies that provide the best experience possible. Unlike some travel agencies, we work with both large and small companies. Often the experience is better going through small, local companies that limit the group size.

We have worked with the companies we use for these tours for many years and have ensured that they have the necessary licenses and insurance in Costa Rica.

Q: How can I get a private tour experience with only my family/group?

A: For most tours, you will see an option to book a private tour for an additional cost. This means that your transportation from your lodging to the starting point will be in a private van and you will have your own private guide.

During peak travel times (Christmas/New Years and Easter Week), tours are often full so private experiences can help you avoid the crowds.

River Safari Tour Arenal

Q: Can I modify or cancel my tour booking? What is the cancellation policy?

A: Yes. Modifications are usually possible with at least one day’s notice, provided the tour company has availability.

Cancellation policies vary by tour company, but typically they allow for a full refund minus a cancellation fee as long as you provide at least 24-48 hours’ notice. Some tour companies require more notice. The specific policy will be on the tour page and your order confirmation.

We highly recommend getting travel insurance for your trip to protect your investment. For more information and recommendations on insurance companies, read our post, Why You Should Get Travel Insurance for Costa Rica.

Q: What if I have a problem with a tour when I arrive?

A: If you have a problem with getting picked up, needing to change a date/time, canceling, etc., we are here to help. Your order confirmation will have our email and phone number in case of emergency. It also will have the contact information for the tour company.
