Coffee-Chocolate Tour at North Fields Cafe
These types of tours are a fun and interactive way to get to know the local culture, and they only take a couple of hours. North Fields Cafe is a small family-owned coffee farm near La Fortuna. They have one of our favorite coffee/chocolate tours in Costa Rica.
On the tour, you will learn all about coffee’s history and its importance in Costa Rica. You’ll get to walk the coffee fields, learn how the beans are processed, and then taste some rich coffee brewed in a traditional chorreador.
For the chocolate component, you’ll see the cacao fruit growing on the tree and learn about making chocolate too. You’ll even get to help make chocolate yourself and enjoy plenty of tastings. The plantation also has sugar cane that you’ll be able to sample.

This tour was fantastic. David, our guide, taught us all about the chocolate and coffee making process and history.
We went with an 8.5 year old and they were engaged the whole time.
Highly recommend booking this experience

We booked the last tour of the day (3:00 pm to 5:30 pm). There were about a dozen people in our tour, but it didn’t feel crowded.
Our guide was amazing! Unfortunately, I can’t remember his name to give him credit. His English was very good, and he had a great upbeat energy about him. He was engaging, funny, and very knowledgable about the history of coffee and chocolate production in Costa Rica. It was obvious that he was passionate about the industry and enjoyed being a guide, and it was more than just a job to him.
The coffee and chocolate were delicious and fresh. My favourite sample was near the end of the tour, when we were all given small bowls of two different types of chocolate melted down, with an assortment of mix-ins to try, like coconut, vanilla, coffee beans, cinnamon, etc. I even had seconds!!
This was one of the highlights of our trip, and if we’re ever back in the area, I would not hesitate for a second to book this tour again. Highly recommend!!

Absolutely recommend! We learned so much about coffee and chocolate, as well as the production of each. Our guide was fantastic!

Very informative tour. We loved every moment of it and we left there with 5 pounds of delicious coffee and about 2 pounds of dark chocolate 🙂

Tasty, informative, and fun! We came away form this tour with a renewed appreciation for the incredible amount of labor that goes into producing commodities we tend to take for granted. We are fortunate to have a small coffee roaster in our town, and after this tour we will be returning to purchasing our coffee from them in an effort to better honor the hard work of those who pick our beans to make our morning ritual of a cup of coffee possible.

This was my third coffee tour, and while it was a decent experience overall, it didn’t quite have the wow factor I was hoping for. It was informative, but it felt more average compared to my previous tours.

Amazing experience! We got insights on how coffee, cocoa and sugarcane is grown and prepared for consumption. The tasting experience made it extra special. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, friendly and took extra effort to provide explanations and answer questions. This tour is not to be missed!

Very knowledgeable and friendly tour guide. Loved all the samples of coffee and chocolate.

We have been on coffee plantation tours before in the Caribbean, but this tour was far superior. Cesar, a North Fields employee, took us around the plantation, where many stations were set up to explain the process of plant to table. He took us from station to station. Cesar first taught us about cocoa and we had a few tastings. Then we learned about coffee and enjoyed tasting that. It was both entertaining and delicious and very well planned and professionally done.
The tour was well-organized and we felt it was well worth the money. There are so many tour choices on the internet when planning a trip like this, and we didn’t want to run the risk of being disappointed. I highly recommend Two Weeks in Costa Rica for setting us up with an excellent tour operator.

This was a great tour. Our guide Alberto was knowledgeable and a lot of fun. We had tastings of both chocolate and coffee. We learned about the history of coffee and chocolate in CR. And walking through the cacoa trees was intoxicating! The trees smelled great. They had a shop where you could buy coffee and chocolate after the tour. Highly recommend!

This was such a fun and informative tour. Learned so much about coffee and chocolate making. Staff was great but tour was longer than expected and you are outside in the hot sun the majority of the time. Just be prepared!

We recently enjoyed the North Fields Coffee & Chocolate Tour, booked through Two Weeks in Costa Rica. When we had to cancel our original booking due to a flight cancellation, Jenn was very obliging and helped us to reschedule our tour for a future date. She waived the cancellation fee and made the process easy. Would use their services again. Thank you!

This is a great and very thorough and educating tour. Our guide was funny and made it fun. It is a small plantation, but you get all three things. Chocolate coffee, sugar cane. Our family of four recommends it.

This was a cool tour. You get 5lto experience not only the coffee but the cocoa and sugar cane as well. Booking with Jenn was a breeze. Thank you for all the good info about CR, Matt and Jenn

The North Fields Coffee & Chocolate Tour was fabulous! Our guide was informative and friendly and we learned a lot. The sampling was extensive – the most I have ever had on this type of tour. And it was a tour that was fine in the rain. We highly recommend this tour!
