Pure Trek Canyoning – Arenal/La Fortuna
The Arenal area is one of the best places in Costa Rica for waterfall rappelling/canyoning. The company that we recommend for this tour, Pure Trek, specializes in canyoning.
The Pure Trek canyoning tour starts with a short 4×4 truck ride up the mountain into the rainforest. This takes you to the canyon where you’ll start rappelling. In total, you’ll do 4 rappels (3 waterfalls and 1 rock wall) at various heights from 40-165 feet (12-50 meters). There are guides at the top and bottom to help you safely navigate. The tour also includes a Monkey Drop (freefall) where you zipline out then drop into a refreshing pool below. This can be controlled by the guides for those looking for less of an adrenalin rush.
The tour wraps up at the base office where you can change clothes and enjoy a delicious homemade meal.
It’s good for kids and adults alike (rated for ages 5+). You’ll only do a small amount of walking to get to the first waterfall (0.2 miles), in between rappels, and then to exit (0.4 miles).
We often hear from people that this was one of their favorite activities of their trip.

Great experience, definitely do the monkey drop!! Did this with my 7YO son and he loved it!
Fun adventure, you’ll definitely get soaked, bring a complete change of clothes for after. Staff are very nice and supportive through the experience. Lunch at the end was delicious. Pick-up/drop-off from Hotel was great.
BTW, if you can see without prescription glasses, don’t wear them. Wish I had left mine in the locker, they were fogged up after 1st rappel and then I was nervous about them breaking in my zipped pocket for other rappels.
There is walking over uneven terrain between rappels, something to be aware of but nothing that would have changed my mind to do the activity.
Wish there was a little practice beforehand to better know how tight (or not) to grip for speed. Would have been able to enjoy the 1st jump (and longest) a little better if I wasn’t focused on grip…could have taken in the experience and scenery better (only reason for 4 stars, otherwise would be 5) and maybe gone a little faster.
