Here’s what we have so far. Me, wife, and son traveling to Liberia in March of 18. Arrive on a Monday afternoon, spend 5 days exploring as a threesome, drop the boy (16) off at a Spanish Immersion School in Playa Flamingo between Tamarindo and Playa Hermosa on Sunday. Mom and I have a week to explore before we pick him up next Sunday and we fly home from Liberia Monday afternoon.
Thinking of staying near the coast when Jr. is with us, and heading inland when he’s at school. Need some ideas for putting together an itinerary. He and I dive, we all dig rain forests, white water rafting, zip lines, and playing in the waves at the beach. We like to hike but nothing too strenuous, and I am a biology teacher so wildlife is a must.
We aren’t into luxury so much, but prefer AC and our own bathroom. Want to keep costs down, but aren’t sleeping in tents. Plan to rent a car.
She and I like waterfalls, volcanoes, coffee plantations, and exploring. We have never been the “sit on the beach for a week” types. Want to try the local flavor and get out of the way, but speak very little Spanish and want to feel safe.
Thoughts?

Hi Eric6792,
Sounds like you and your wife might enjoy either the Miravalles Volcano area and/or Bijagua. Both have a local feel and are safe, have wildlife, etc. For the time with your son, you could do some scuba diving from Playa Hermosa and take day trips inland to somewhere like the Rincon de la Vieja area for zip-lining, river tubing, hiking, etc. He might like Tamarindo too, since it has great surf. If you’d like us to help with a full blown itinerary, we do offer that service. Check out our Itinerary Help Page for more.
