Matt and Jen,
We will be spending a few days in Drake Bay on our upcoming trip. I read the advice to take plenty of cash since there are no ATMs and some businesses do not take credit cards. Can US dollars be used or should be plan on taking colon?

Hi Michelle,
Yes, it is good to have extra cash on hand in Drake Bay We are actually visiting Drake Bay now and yes, there are still no ATMs or Banks. You can definitely use USD at shops and restaurants here but you may not always get the best exchange rate (sometimes they base it on an even 500 colones to $1 when the exchange might be closer to 560 to $1). You could also have a hard time breaking larger bills (above a $20) if you are just buying something small. But otherwise it should be fine.
