We are looking to go to a beach for 4 nights at the end of July with our children aged 7 and 10 years, after time in rain forest and travelling onward from Arenal to the beach and then back to San Jose for flight home – would you have a suggestion?

Hi Elly, 
Since you are flying out of SJO, you might want to check out Jaco or Manuel Antonio for your beach option. Both are a reasonable distance back to the airport and popular with families. Manuel Antonio has a lot of wildlife around town and in the national park, so that destination is especially popular with families.
