Selvatura Guided Hanging Bridges & Sloth Sanctuary Tour
This tour combines a hanging bridges walk with a visit to Sloth Sanctuary at Selvatura.
Guided Hanging Bridges Tour
First, you’ll explore the hanging bridges with a bilingual naturalist guide. Selvatura has 8 hanging bridges ranging from 170-560 feet (51-170 meters). The main focus of the tour is enjoying the amazing panoramic views of the cloud forest canopy from above. With a little luck, you should be able to see some wildlife too. Many kinds of birds can be spotted and wildlife like bats, tarantulas, butterflies, and various kinds of lizards.
Between the bridges, you’ll pass through lush cloud forest along a fairly flat, well-maintained trail. The naturalist guide sets a comfortable pace for everyone in the group and makes stops to teach you about the cloud forest and its flora and fauna.
The hike is about 2 miles (3 km) and takes 2-2.5 hours. This is a small group tour with up to 8 people per guide.
Sloth Sanctuary
After, you’ll take a short tour (30-40 minutes) of the Sloth Sanctuary on the same property. This is a huge enclosure that has around 20 two-toed sloths. They have been rescued and are unable to be released back into the wild. The nicely maintained facility provides these animals a home that mimics their natural environment.
The sloths are often close to visitors as they go about their daily activities, climbing around and feeding, so this is a wonderful opportunity to see these generally elusive animals close up. You’ll have a bilingual guide to teach you about these amazing creatures,

Walking through the canopy and the views from the hanging bridges were wonderful. Would liked to have seen more birds and animals but it rained the whole time. Eight people in a group is too many to be able to all hear the guide. Disappointed guide did not use scope when bird was spotted but perhaps that was because of the rain. Sloth exhibit was fun and good discussion with guide at exhibit. Tea and snack at restaurant was nice. We finished by noon but there is no noon return bus so had to wait til 1pm to get shuttle bus back to hotel.

We did a group tour of the hanging bridges and the sloth sanctuary. Very knowledgeable guides for both. The views from the bridges are fantastic, and the bridges aren’t very wobbly (just a little bouncy) and have sturdy handrails. It was fascinating to see sloths up close and active and learn more about them. The only negative was the drive – the worst road we drove on in Costa Rica! If you don’t want to drive very slowly over rocks and potholes, opt for transportation.

The park itself is beautiful and there is so much to see and do. I tried to fit in many of the available activities and, although they said there will be enough time for a break between activities, I found myself running from one to the next (they start at set times), and was exhausted by the end of the day. My recommendation would be to take 2-3 activities at the most. The nature guides were OK. It felt a bit like they were giving knowledge from scripted texts rather than from intimate knowledge of the ecosystem. I did learn a few interesting things and they did answer questions, so still worthwhile taking the guided options for these activities.
