Driving from San Jose to San Gerardo de Dota – possible after Hurricane Nate damage?

My hostel in the Cerro Chirripo area has informed me that Route 2, the Intercontinental Highway, between Cartago and San Isidro de el General is closed due to hurricane damage and that traffic is being re-routed via the coastal route, which would add at least 2 hours to our planned driving itinerary.  Our plan is to drive from San Jose to Dota and then from there to Cerro Chirripo.  A map I found on the Costa Rica Highway Department’s website seems to indicate that we could get around the closed section. Do you have any local road info to share?!

Hi Nicole,
Not sure if you’ve already come (its sounds like you might have) but the road between San Jose and San Gerardo de Dota (and San Isidro de El General) has been back open for a while. They have been closing sections at night to continue repairs but we don’t recommend driving that route in the dark anyway because of fog.
