Hi!  I love your blog!  After much thought and travel to Costa Rica, we are going to try it out for a year with our two girls, 5 yrs and 3 yrs.  I would love your advice on where we should go based on our critieria.  My husband needs to be 1.5-2 hrs from an international airport (Liberia or San Jose), we would like to be close to the ocean, and a community (small to medium), (Expat or Tico) with kids.  Thanks for your help!

Hi lizrohlich, if you need to be 1.5-2 hours from one of the major airports, and near the beach, then you are basically looking at towns in Guanacaste or the area around Jaco. There are probably more schools to choose from in the Tamarindo area (if you plan to put the kids in school) but you don’t have to live right there. You could look at places like Brasilito or Potrero, which are smaller and have more locals. Jaco has some schools too. It is also kind of a big town but there are smaller towns like Playa Herradura or Playa Hermosa nearby. Playa Herradura is best known for the big Los Suenos resort but there is actually a nice Tico neighborhood on the inland side of the highway with lots of expats mixed in.  Hope that gives you some ideas, best of luck to you and your family!
