My family of five is traveling to Costa Rica for two weeks in July.  (The kids are 7, 10 and 12.) Our itinerary is to fly into San Jose and then travel to La Fortuna, Monteverdi, Manuel Antonio and then back to San Jose.  We don\’t want to rent a car because of expense, road conditions/rainy season and lack of road signs. I have seen quite a bit on shuttles but that adds up with 5 people!  How are the public buses as far as schedule and conditions on the bus?  You have mentioned private drivers…do you have advice/specifics on this option?  I am wondering if that can end up being cheaper because we are 5 people and if so how do we make these arrangements?  Thanks!  Your website has been so helpful.

Hi thehunleys,
Yes, the shared shuttles can add up quick with 5 people so often it is more affordable to take a private shuttle. The private ones are also nice because you don’t have to stick to the shared shuttle schedule (you can depart whenever you need to). The bus works but is slow and somewhat stressful with luggage, especially with 5. For private shuttles, we work with several different companies and can give you a quote on each leg of the trip if you’d like. The trip between La Fortuna and Monteverde is most economical on the shared shuttle-boat-shuttle (also sometimes called the Jeep-boat-Jeep), but we can advise on that as well.
