Whitewater Rafting on Savegre River (Class II-III) – Manuel Antonio
This whitewater rafting tour on the Savegre River (Class II-III) near Manuel Antonio offers the perfect mix of beauty and excitement. This is a good river for first-time rafters; no experience is necessary!
Arriving at the River
From Manuel Antonio (Quepos), you’ll be driven into the countryside towards the pristine mountains. On the way, you’ll pass through small communities and see simple homes and farms. To break up the drive, the van will stop at a local’s house in the town of El Silencio for a restroom break and optional purchase of homemade empanadas and fruit juice.
Arriving at the river, you’ll be fitted with life jackets, helmets, and a paddle. After a safety talk and instructions, you’ll be split up into rafts (keeping families and groups together) and start your adventure. The Savegre River is calm in many parts so you can take in the lush jungle and beautiful surroundings.
Rafting Adventure
As you approach rapids, your guide will call out instructions to paddle forward, backpaddle, or get low in the raft. Another guide in a kayak, a safety kayaker, is always nearby in case of any issues. The company we use for this rafting trip has been a leader in the river-rafting community for decades and is known for their good judgement and safety focus.
As a team, you and your fellow rafters will splash, paddle, and bump through Class I, II, and III rapids. In total, there are around five bigger rapids and lots of smaller ones. In between the more exciting whitewater runs, you can relax, paddle more leisurely, and even take a swim a few times. The guide will also point out interesting trees, wildlife, and other features along the river.
Waterfall and Snack
About an hour into your river time, you’ll beach the rafts on a sandbar and take a short 5-minute walk to a stunning waterfall. After a swim and some pictures, you’ll be served fresh fruit, cookies, and cold water at the river’s edge.
The second part of the river has a similar mix of fun rapids and calmer water.
Meal and Logistics
The driver will meet your group on the riverbank to take you back to Manuel Antonio for the included meal at the base camp. The meal is a typical Costa Rican dish like arroz con pollo (rice with chicken) or a vegetarian casado (rice, beans, vegetables). Iced tea and cold water are also served. During lunch, you can view the pictures the photographer took on the river and purchase them directly.
Note: For the afternoon tour, the lunch is served first before traveling to the river.
The drive to the river is about 1.5 hours and it’s 45-minutes back to town after rafting.
