Kuna Vela Sailing Tour – Playas del Coco
The Experience
This laid-back sailing tour is perfect if you’re looking for a more intimate cruising experience from Playas del Coco or Playa Hermosa in Guanacaste. It’s unique from other tours in the area since it’s on a sailboat, not a catamaran.
The tour begins on the beach in Playas del Coco. After checking in, the staff will give a quick overview of what’s included and what to expect for the day. The expert crew will then usher you from the shore in a dinghy to the 47-foot monohull sailboat.
Once aboard the sturdy sailboat, you’ll head along the gorgeous Guanacaste coastline to a snorkel spot. The location depends on conditions that day. When we did the tour, we went to a wonderful spot called Punta Gorda, where we were able to see many different kinds of reef fish, including puffer fish and angel fish. There’s also the chance to see marine life such as dolphins, sea turtles, and whales (seasonal) on the way to and from the snorkel location.
After snorkeling and swimming, you’ll enjoy a delicious meal of homemade finger sandwiches, chips and dip, and fresh fruit. The crew will also come around with refreshments during the cruise. Complimentary drinks include rum punch, Cuba libres, local Costa Rican beer, non-alcoholic drinks including iced tea and soda, and bottled water.
After the meal, you’ll make your way back to Playas del Coco. Weather permitting, the crew will raise the sails so you’ll get to sail for at least part of the tour.
Tour Logistics and Boat
The Kuna Vela sailing tour is offered in the morning or afternoon for sunset (weather permitting).
Since there is no marina in Playas del Coco, you’ll wade through the shallow water to board a dinghy to get to the sailboat.
The Kuna Vela is a monohull sailboat, not a catamaran. It has a good amount of sitting room in the front on the deck and a small covered area in the back with shade. Bathrooms are available below.
The boat has a 15-person maximum so it never feels crowded.
Closed on Sundays.
