Private Kuna Vela Sailing Tour – Playas del Coco
The Experience
If you’re looking for a private sailing experience from Playas del Coco (Coco Beach), Playa Hermosa, Playa Panama, or the Papagayo Peninsula, Kuna Vela is the perfect option. The 47-foot monohull sailboat is a great size for cruising along the scenic Guanacaste coastline. Your half-day private charter can be done in the morning (generally the best wildlife viewing) or afternoon for sunset.
For private tours, they can usually pick you up directly at the beach where you’re staying. The expert crew will usher you from the shore in a dinghy to the sailboat.
Once aboard the sturdy sailboat, you’ll head along the gorgeous coastline to a snorkel spot. The location depends on conditions that day. When we did the tour, we went to a wonderful spot called Punta Gorda, where we were able to see many different kinds of reef fish, including puffer fish and angel fish. There’s also the chance to see marine life such as dolphins, sea turtles, and whales (seasonal) on the way to and from the snorkel location.
After snorkeling and swimming, you’ll enjoy a delicious meal of fresh Mahi Mahi prepared on the sailboat with mango salsa, cabbage, red peppers, avocado, and chipotle cream sauce; homemade finger sandwiches; chips and dip; and fresh fruit.
The crew will also come around with refreshments during the cruise. Complimentary drinks for the private tour include rum punch, Cuba libres, wine, sangria, local Costa Rican beer, premium liquor, and non-alcoholic drinks including iced tea and soda, and bottled water.
After the meal, you’ll make your way back to the beach where you are staying. Weather permitting, the crew will raise the sails so you’ll get to sail for at least part of the tour.
Tour Logistics and Boat
The Kuna Vela private sailing tour is offered in the morning or afternoon for sunset (weather permitting).
The Kuna Vela is a monohull sailboat, not a catamaran. It has a good amount of sitting room in the front on the deck and a small covered area in the back with shade. Bathrooms are available below.

Tour Details:
Cost (2026): $999 for up 8 people. $120 per person for each additional person (max of 15 people total).
2027: $1,099 for up 8 people. $120 per person after 8 people (max of 15 people total).
*Children under 2 do not count towards the 15-person maximum.
Offered:Â Morning – 8:30 a.m. (check in at 8:15 a.m.) to 12:30 p.m. (approximate)
Afternoon/Sunset – 2:00 p.m. (check in at 1:30 p.m.) to 6:00 p.m. (approximate)
*We don’t book the afternoon tour in September and October due to the likelihood of rain.
Includes: Drinks (rum punch, Cuba Libres, wine, sangria, local Costa Rican beer, premium liquor, non-alcoholic drinks, bottled water); fresh fruit; corn chips with guacamole and bean dip; fresh Mahi Mahi fish prepared on the sailboat with mango salsa, cabbage, red peppers, avocado, and chipotle cream sauce; tray-passed finger sandwiches (normally ham and cheese, and cucumber and cream cheese); snorkel and safety equipment; noodles for swimming; and complimentary photos. *Dietary restrictions can be accommodated. Pickup: Pickup on the beach is also available for private tours (free for Playas del Coco, Playa Hermosa, and Playa Panama). If you are staying at another beach (Riu, Four Seasons, Andaz, Planet Hollywood, etc.), there is a $100 charge.
