Private Heliconias Hanging Bridges + Sloth Tour
This tour combines a private guided hike of Heliconias Hanging Bridges with a sloth tour.
Heliconias Hanging Bridges
Your tour will begin at Heliconias Hanging Bridges, part of the Heliconias Rainforest Lodge property in Bijagua.
Perched on a hill, this vast property borders the lush Tenorio Volcano National Park and has distant views of Lake Nicaragua. It’s a more rustic and off-the-beaten path location than most hanging bridges in Costa Rica, making for a really cool experience.
A private guide will lead you along the property’s well-maintained trails. The hike is easy to moderate (about 2.5 km/1.5 miles) and brings you through dense, primary rainforest (never been cut down). There are some steps and inclines for a bit of exercise but nothing too intense.
Along the way, you will cross three hanging bridges, each about 312 feet (95 meters) long and 100 feet (30 meters) high. These give an amazing perspective of the rainforest canopy from above. The bridges sway a little but are very sturdy, with large metal cables.
During the hike, your guide will point out interesting plants and animals.
We have visited a couple of times and have seen a large troop of white faced monkeys, toucans, Crested guans (large turkey-like birds), butterflies, lizards, a snake, and many different kinds of unique insects.
We even learned about a special fruit tree that is the favorite of the Baird’s Tapir. Tapirs are the largest land mammals in Central America and are sometimes spotted on the property.
The guides that we work with are locals in the area who are experts in the flora and fauna of the tropical rainforest.
Sloth Tour
For the second part of the tour, you will visit a private property in Bijagua where sloths are frequently spotted. Although they do not guarantee sightings (this is an ethical sloth tour), it is very likely that you’ll see one. The property has the specific trees that the sloths like.
You’re also likely to see tree frogs or poison dart frogs (harmless) in the ponds.
This adds about 1-1.5 hours to the tour. This part of the tour is an easy hike along a mostly flat dirt trail.

Our time with Daniel from Onca tours that was booked via Two Weeks in Costa Rica was excellent. He was knowledgeable and helped us to see so many birds, numerous sloths, and a little frog. We had a great time on this private tour and would highly recommend it and Daniel.
