Private Dolphin Watching Tour from Puerto Jimenez or Golfito
The Golfo Dulce is a special place for marine wildlife, and on this tour, you’ll be getting an up close look.
On a small private boat, you’ll depart the shores of Puerto Jimenez or Golfito with your guide and captain. As you motor along, the guide will teach you about the features of the Gulf, including how it is one of the only tropical fjords in the world. You’ll also learn about the important mangroves and rivers nearby.
The goal of the tour is to find and observe bottlenose and spotted dolphins, which can be seen year-round. During certain times of year (December to April and July to November), it’s also possible to spot humpback whales that are passing through the area.
There is no guarantee of spotting marine creatures, since it is nature after all, but the Gulf is usually quite active. You may even encounter sea turtles, sea snakes, rays, and flying fish.
In addition to tourism, the operator we use collects important scientific data about the Gulf’s marine life. During the tour, you may be able to participate by listening to dolphin or whale songs using a hydrophone or helping point out surfacing dolphins for their photo-ID catalog.
The tour also takes you along the coastline of Piedras Blancas National Park and to the mangroves, allowing for bird watching and photo ops of the beautiful untouched shorelines.
In this area, if conditions are good, you’ll also stop to snorkel at the coral reef (best during dry season, January through April).
The boat is a small, but sturdy and comfortable, open console. It has plenty of seating and a lot of shade. Note that there is no bathroom on board.
The tour starting location is the main beach in Puerto Jimenez or the public dock in Golfito.
