Diria Coffee Tour – Private Tour
Location and Background
This tour is located in the countryside in the small town of Hojancha (near Nicoya), part of Costa Rica’s Blue Zone. It makes a nice stop if you are traveling to/from beach towns in Guanacaste, or as a day trip from Samara or Nosara. The drive from Samara to the tour is about 45 minutes. There is safe parking in case you have your luggage with you.
At Diria Coffee, you’ll be visiting the only coffee producer located within one of the world’s five Blue Zones—areas known for longevity and health.
Diria Coffee has been around since 1963. Their large cooperative consists of an impressive 192 local coffee farmers, many of indigenous descent.
Coffee Production Tour
The tour starts in a typical Chorotega-style indigenous building with a thatched roof. Here, your private bilingual guide will share information about the area and its rich indigenous culture, as well as the history of Diria Coffee.
After getting some background, you’ll head to a small coffee field to see how coffee plants grow from seed, are maintained, and how the fruits (called cherries) are harvested by hand.
Continuing to the processing plant, you’ll see where the coffee cherries are received from the many small farmers and divided by quality. Your guide will explain the different quality standards and what those beans will eventually become.
As you make your way through the facility, you’ll also learn about the drying process, roasting, grinding, and finally, packaging.
Cupping
One of the best parts of the tour is the tasting at the end. In front of a huge rotating table, you’ll learn the proper technique for cupping coffee. This method of slurping quickly from a spoon gives your taste buds a whole new appreciation for the subtle differences between coffee varieties. It can also be quite fun and entertaining for your family or group!
The guide will explain how Costa Rica’s best coffees are determined on a national level using this technique. In addition to cupping, you’ll also get to enjoy your favorite variety along with a small snack.
