Cooking Class & Ethical Sloth Tour Combo
This is a combo tour through a local company in the small town of Katira, about 35 minutes from Bijagua.
Sloth Tour
Your morning will start with a sloth tour. You’ll meet at the tour company’s office then head out to nearby properties in search of sloths and other wildlife.
This is an ethical sloth tour, meaning that you will see sloths in their natural habitat. In some places in Bijagua and elsewhere in Costa Rica, sloths are, unfortunately, taken from the wild and brought to private reserves for purposes of tourism. You can learn more about this problem with our post, Sloth Tours in Costa Rica: What’s Ethical?
For this sloth tour, the tour company works with local farmers to help find sloths that are in the area on the day of your visit.
When we did this tour, our bilingual guide drove us along a side road looking for sloths. We saw a three-toed sloth in a neighbor’s tree and one much farther away on the edge of a field.
We then went to meet a local farmer at his property. There we walked a short trail in the rainforest with the guide and farmer. We were able to see a two-toed sloth at a distance and close up through the guide’s scope. We also saw some howler monkeys and Great Curassows (pheasant-like birds).
There are no guarantees that you will see a sloth, but both three-toed and two-toed sloths are common in the Bijagua area so with a little luck, you should be able to spot one.
Cooking Class
After the sloth tour (around 10:00 am), you’ll do a fun cooking class.
Alongside a local cook, you’ll get to prepare traditional Costa Rican food. The menu varies but you will make things like smoked pork or chicken, patacones (savory fried plantains), rice and beans, pico de gallo, and rice pudding for dessert. You’ll also have the chance to hand grind corn to make fresh tortillas. Vegetarian and vegan options available.
Everything is prepared over a woodstove. Many of the ingredients come from the local area.
At the end, you’ll sit down to enjoy the delicious meal you helped prepare.
We did this tour with our kids (ages 5 and 9) and they both loved it. It’s very hands on.
