Chocolate tours are a fun way to get to know Costa Rica’s culture and they only take an hour or two. This chocolate tour is at Vista Los Suenos Adventure Park, right outside Jaco.

The tour starts with a short walk through a cacao forest. Vista Los Suenos has gathered an extensive collection of cacao trees from all over the world. Your bilingual guide will teach you about these interesting trees with their brightly colored red, brown, yellow, and green pods.

At the chocolate station, you’ll then learn how the fruit is processed. Much of the tour is hands-on. You’ll have a chance to shell the dried beans with a giant mortar and pestle then see and smell the roasting process. Using a hand grinder, you’ll also get to help churn the beans into bits of gooey chocolate.

The best part is all the delicious tastings. The hot chocolate was some of the best we’ve ever had! You’ll enjoy samples of milk chocolate and rich dark chocolate as well. 

This experience is a fun food tour but also lets you explore the culture and historical significance of chocolate in the region. 

Minimal walking required, all on flat terrain. Most of the tour is at the chocolate station, which is covered and has benches for sitting. This is a great tour for families with young children or anyone with mobility limitations.

Cost: $40 per person plus 13% tax. Free for children 6 and under.

Lunch Available for $19 pp: Buffet with a variety of salads, traditional Costa Rican food (e.g., rice with chicken or shrimp; rice and beans), grilled meat, fish, and vegetarian options. Includes a fresh fruit drink, coffee, and dessert. Craft beer, wine, and cocktails available for an additional charge. The restaurant is open starting at 12:00 p.m.
