La Fortuna Hotel Guide: Where to Stay Near Arenal Volcano

Last Updated: February 22, 2024

La Fortuna is a destination for almost every type of traveler. It offers a huge selection of lodging that ranges from budget-friendly hostels to mid-range hotels with volcano views all the way up to the most luxurious resorts. In this guide, we’ll help you narrow the list and give our insider tips on where to stay in La Fortuna/Arenal. Our recommendations are given from budget to high end, and we made sure to note their location.

La Fortuna Hotel Guide

Tips for Finding the Right Hotel in La Fortuna

One of the biggest factors in deciding on a hotel in La Fortuna is location.

If you do not plan to rent a car, you will need to rely on taxis or the bus to get around. And because things are more spread out in this area, many people find it easiest to stay near the downtown. This is where most restaurants, shops, and other amenities are located. Note that the downtown tends to be on the loud side so pick a place outside the center if this is important to you.

If you will have a car, you will have more flexibility. Many of the best choices for lodging are outside the main area of town on the road leading to Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal. This is where you will find lush rainforest and some fantastic volcano views.

Another thing to keep in mind when comparing hotels is that some options are a 30 minute or more drive from the downtown.

Budget Hotels in La Fortuna

Argdivan Hostel

If you’re traveling on a budget, check out Argdivan Hostel. This small hostel is located just outside downtown La Fortuna on a quieter side street but still very close to restaurants and stores. The main draw is the large second floor terrace for relaxing. The hosts are friendly and helpful. Shared dorms, $10-15. Private room, $33. Private room with kitchenette and balcony, $50. Check Rates and Availability Here.

La Fortuna Waterfall Bungalows

Another good budget option is La Fortuna Waterfall Bungalows. This small hotel has only a handful of cabins. The wooden cabins are rustic and charming, with high ceilings, a nice fan over the bed, and air conditioning. It’s located on the road to La Fortuna Waterfall so just outside the downtown. $60 for a one-bedroom bungalow. $110 for a two-bedroom bungalow. Check Rates and Availability Here.

Hotel Monte Real

Hotel Monte Real is another option close to the downtown, but far enough out so that it isn’t loud. We stayed here on one of our first visits to La Fortuna and really enjoyed it. It is only a short walk to the main area of town, restaurants, and shops. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, and offer amenities like A/C, TV, and hot water. The property has a nice pool and sits next to a scenic stream. $70-100, double occupancy. Check Rates and Availability Here.

Selvita Lodge

Selvita Lodge is another good option on the road to La Fortuna Waterfall. This location is not within walking distance to the downtown, but an inexpensive taxi ride away. Selvita offers a handful of rustic, but clean and spacious, cabins. It’s family run, and many guests say it feels like a homestay. Cabins have a private hot water bathroom, air conditioning, and TV. $80-110, double occupancy. Check Rates and Availability Here.

Hotel Rancho Cerro Azul

Our last recommendation for budget lodging is Hotel Rancho Cerro Azul. This family-run lodge has several comfortable cabins made of beautiful local wood. Some are large enough for families. Each cabin has its own porch with a hammock where you can enjoy the gardens and rainforest views. One even has a jacuzzi. $85-140, double occupancy. Check Rates and Availability Here.

Mid-range Hotels in La Fortuna

Arenal Observatory Lodge

One of our favorite properties in the Arenal area is the Observatory. This lodge is as close to the volcano as you can get so has incredible views. The property is located more remotely, next to the national park, so the grounds see a lot of wildlife. Staying here also means you can access the lodge’s many trails through the rainforest.

If you want to stay here, it’s best to have a car, as the drive to La Fortuna is about 30 minutes. Rooms range from budget-friendly options in La Casona building to nicely appointed Smithsonian Rooms and Junior Suites. The Observatory is certified for sustainability in Costa Rica. $100-210, double occupancy. Check Rates and Availability Here.

Heliconias Nature Inn and Hot Springs

We have stayed at Heliconias Nature Inn and Hot Springs and loved it. This is a small lodge run by a very friendly local family. They have bungalows set in the rainforest and a few treehouses too. Rooms are nice and clean and have plenty of amenities (A/C, TV, mini-fridge, restaurant on-site). It is about 25 minutes outside La Fortuna so a good drive away, but its country location is part of what makes it special.

For the best rainforest views, stay in a Deluxe Bungalow. We loved the Glass Bungalows too, which have floor-to-ceiling windows and overlook the vegetable/pineapple garden and small coffee field.

The property now has some hot springs right on site.

$170-340 (double occupancy). Check Rates and Availability Here.

Hotel Lomas del Volcan

Hotel Lomas del Volcan is a longstanding favorite in the Arenal area. They have several freestanding wooden cabins (around 50), each with a private porch and volcano view. Each has either 1 king bed or 2 queen beds, A/C, and a TV. The property has a gorgeous new pool as well as a restaurant. Located on a side road about a 5-10 minute drive from downtown. $150-330 (double occupancy). Check Rates and Availability Here.

Hotel El Silencio del Campo

For a little more comfort, but with more character than a resort, there’s Hotel El Silencio del Campo. They have individual bungalows and also their own thermal pools and spa. The location is good; the hotel is on the road going to Arenal Volcano, only a short drive to town. This is one of the most popular hotels in the area so be sure to book in advance. $215-330. Arenal Springs Resort & Spa

For a resort experience with a more authentic feel, check out Arenal Springs. It has spacious, clean rooms with good volcano views, but the main draw is the big, multi-layered pool and hot springs onsite (hotel guests only). The property is spread out, with several nicely equipped bungalows with modern touches.

Arenal Springs is located about 10 minutes from downtown La Fortuna. They are certified for sustainability in Costa Rica.

$300 (double occupancy). Arenal Springs also has larger master suites that can hold up to 10 people. Check Rates and Availability Here.

Arenal Manoa & Hot Springs

Arenal Manoa is another great choice for a small resort with hot springs. We have stayed here and enjoyed it. The hot springs are small, but nice, and the large cool water pool is good for the daytime when it is warmer.

This is a very family-friendly resort, but it draws all types of travelers. Accommodations consist of bungalows (2-units per building). Each has a nice outdoor sitting area surrounded by gardens and overlooking Arenal Volcano. For those looking to splurge, they also have a new suite with a private pool.

Arenal Manoa is located about a 10 minute drive from the downtown. The restaurant on-site is good. Arenal Manoa is certified for sustainability in Costa Rica. $230-500, double occupancy. Check Rates and Availability Here.

High-end Hotels in La Fortuna

Lost Iguana Resort & Spa

Lost Iguana is a more affordable high-end resort in the Arenal area. The resort is located outside town near Mistico Hanging Bridges and has nice views of the volcano. With romantic suites as well as rooms that can be connected, it is a good option for both couples and families. The property is built into the hillside and has two pools, one regular and one heated (not hot-spring fed). Because this option is well outside town, it is best with a rental car. $175-700 (double occupancy). Check Rates and Availability Here.

Amor Arenal

Amor Arenal is a newer high-end hotel in the Arenal area. This adults-only lodge (ages 13+) is set in the thick rainforest just outside town. The gorgeous wooden casitas are spacious and have luxe features, including a large walk-in shower and spring-fed plunge pool. The grand windows allow you to take in the jungle surrounds. The property has a spa, gym, yoga center, and meditation deck. $675-750 (double occupancy). Check Rates and Availability Here.

Tabacon Thermal Resort & Spa

Tabacon is one of the area’s most famous hotels. Its elaborate hot springs resort is a destination in itself for day visitors, but if you stay at the hotel, you can use the springs for free. Tabacon has a variety of rooms. All are well equipped and modern, with A/C, cable TV, and a mini bar. It is located outside town on the road going to Lake Arenal, about 15 minutes away. Because it is a resort, it has a few restaurants/bars to choose from. Tabacon Resort is certified for sustainability in Costa Rica. $450-750 (double occupancy). Check Rates and Availability Here.

The Springs Resort & Spa

Another well-known luxury resort is the Springs. With beautiful, well-maintained rooms, five restaurants on-site, 28 hot springs pools, and even its own adventure park, this place has just about everything you would need. Although the property is fairly large, it doesn’t have too many rooms so service is still personalized. The Springs isn’t far from town, but in a secluded location on a side road. Rates range from $600 for a spacious guestroom for 2 people all the way to $4,000 for a multibedroom villa holding 18 people. Check Rates and Availability Here.

Nayara Gardens and Nayara Springs

The most sought-after resort in La Fortuna is probably the Nayara Gardens and its luxe sister property, Nayara Springs. These eco-friendly boutique hotels have beautiful grounds, excellent food and service, and nice volcano views. The Nayara Springs (adults only), where each villa has its own private plunge pool fed by hot springs, is the perfect getaway for couples. $700-1,400 (double occupancy). Check Rates and Availability Here.

  1. Hotel El Silencio del Campo was one of our favorite hotels when we were for a round trip in February in CR. Great location and very friendly staff.
    Btw. great web site.
    Regards from Germany

    1. It’s great to hear that you enjoyed El Silencio because I just booked a villa there. Can you comment on best villa location within the property? I would prefer a quieter location, rather than being near the road, etc.

      1. We had #8 and it was in my opinion far away from the road and we had a beautiful view to the Arenal volcano.
There is not to much traffic on the road.
        Very nice location.

  2. For Arenal Manoa Did the pool have water heater or was it regular outside temperature? Btw, I was in CR last year in December and couldn’t be more happy with the amount of tips I got from you guys. I also booked a hotel right off your site when I went up to Monteverde. I am thinking of going again soon, so keep up the great work. It would be great if you guys created a YouTube channel as well!

    1. Hi Edgar, Arenal Manoa has a few hot springs pools, and in another location, a cool water pool. I don’t think that one’s heated but it’s in the sun so was plenty warm when we were there.

Thanks so much for booking a hotel through our website and glad our tips helped you with your trip planning! We do actually have a YouTube channel with a handful of videos. Wish we had time to make them more regularly – we will try to work on that.

  3. Great website guys. We are a family of four (2 kids of 8 and 10) from Phoenix, AZ visiting Costa Rica during christmas time in 2017. I have booked both Arenal Observatory Lodge and Hotel Silencio.
I’m in a dilemma on what to choose. The kids love the pools and my wife likes hot sprints and i like I hiking 🙂 .

    Need help in picking one.

BTW, thanks for your pointers and that form with booking a car. I’m going to use that.

    1. Hi Sadha, Both are great choices. El Silencio is much closer to town than the Observatory, which is convenient for going out to eat. We love the Observatory, though, because it’s such a unique experience to stay so close to a volcano. It has a pool and the trails too. It’s also really close to other great hikes. El Silencio has a handful of hot springs pools and the property is gorgeous, but you could always take your wife to Tabacon or somewhere for the springs. Tough call, but with kids, I think I’d go with the Observatory.

  4. Hi. I just booked the Arenal Volcano Inn…your thoughts?
P.S. Great website and very useful for first time CR visitors.

  5. 3 couples coming into experience Arenal for 4 nights in Feb.2018 before heading to Tamarindo for a week. Flying into Liberia. If we stay in La Fortuna will we be able to take taxi to sites at volcano? We want to hike and bike and enjoy the interior. Would it be best if we rent a car? Are there drivers that we could arrange to bring us to La Fortuna? Thanks in advance.
We have been to the pacific coast twice and just had drivers transport us b/t the airport and our vacation lodging.

    1. Hi Lisa, La Fortuna is more spread out so many people choose to rent a car as taking taxis can get expensive. A lot of people will shuttle from the airport and then rent a car once they arrive, or you could rent one right from LIR Airport if you’re comfortable driving long distances. Taxis are available though, and if you wanted to do guided tours, those usually include transportation from your hotel. Let us know if you need any help arranging a shuttle from the airport. We work with a few very reliable companies.

      1. I would love information on shuttle service for 6 adults b/t Liberia and La Fortuna and b/t La Fortuna and Tamarindo.

  6. Hi Jenn and Matt,
Have you heard anything about Baldi Hot Springs? Looks big and might be fun for kids with water slide and park.
    Thanks,
    Jamie

    1. Hi James, Baldi is a really popular resort too. It’s bigger and has a lot of hot springs on site, which is great. The rooms are nice and like you said, it’s good for kids with the big slide and park. Some people find it a little over the top for Costa Rica/commercial-feeling but most really like it.

  7. There seems to be quite a bit that is sold out for our dates already in March 2018. What do we think of Baldi? Is it a good choice for the price?

    1. Hi Glenn, Baldi is a decent value because of the hot springs on site, and the rooms are nice. Drinks and other things are a little pricey but you can always go off the resort to eat. Not sure if you have checked if Arenal Springs Resort has availability, but that’s another excellent choice. It’s a little smaller and still has the springs right there.

  8. I am so excited I found your website! Just booked two nights at the Arenal Observatory Lodge!

Do you have any suggestions on a quiet west coast beach town for our last two nights in Costa Rica? We will be flying out of San Jose.

    Thanks!!!!

    1. Hi Nichole, If you’re flying out of San Jose and only have two night, we would recommend somewhere on the Central Pacific Coast so that you don’t have to drive as far to get back to the airport. Most of this area is developed, but you might like Playa Esterillos. That’s a quiet stretch of coastline with only a few hotels.

  9. Hi, We are looking at booking Arenal Kioro. Is this a hotel you would recommend? 2nd choices are Arenal Manoa or Arenal Springs. Family of 4 with 2 adult children ages 20 and 22. We would get two rooms each night.

Tabacon is avail but expensive….double the cost of the 3 listed above. Is it worth it? Happy to splurge but only if it is over the top wonderful!

    Thank you !

    1. Hi Sharon, Arenal Kioro is a wonderful choice that we recommend to clients. It is a good alternative to Tabacon and has a few hot springs pools on site and more at another facility a little down the road. Tabacon is more expensive but is really great. Good service and very nice facilities- feels more like a resort than most other hotels in the area. The other good thing about Tabacon is that you have free use of the hot springs, which are arguably the best in the area. Entrance is around $85 pp so if you were planning to go anyway, that is a good savings.

  10. We are planning a25th anniversary in October flying into San Jose .I have narrowed the choices down to 6.The cheaper choices being Casa Luna Hotel and Spa,Volcano lodge and spa,and Arenal Springs.next is Baldi,The royal Carin thermal water spa and resort and the most expensive hotel el silencio del campo. What are the pros and cons of each….Before finding your sight I was leaning towards the Volcano lodge and spa or the Royal Carin thermal water spa and resort. Plus what are some must dos when there? How is Costa rica in Oct?Best food, tours and prices in general….I am a planner….Thanks

    1. Hi Shannon, There are lots of differences between those hotels, two prominent differences being the size and amenities, since not all of them have hot springs on site. If you’re looking for something smaller and more intimate feeling, we’d go with El Silencio. For something that feels more like a resort, Arenal Springs. People really like the Volcano Lodge and Spa too, which is more affordable.

On your other questions, our La Fortuna: What to Expect post has some ideas for must dos in the area, and you could also check out our book, Top 10 Costa Rica Itineraries. La Fortuna is covered in the Best of chapter and some others. For weather, read our Weather post and Rainy Season post. For food, we have a guide about traditional foods, and for prices, our Money Matters post will help.

  11. We are planning a trip to Costa Rica in mid May and have some questions. We would like to rent a car, drive from San Jose to La Fortuna, take the taxi/boat/taxi shuttle to Monteverde, and return to La Fortuna after three nights in Monteverde. Questions: Is there somewhere we can leave a rental car in La Fortuna while we are gone to Monteverde? How can we get around Monteverde without a vehicle? Other questions: Is there any problem with safe drinking water (i.e. from hotels, restaurants, park entrance stations, etc) or do we have to buy bottled water? What about safety of food purchased at markets/grocery stores?

  12. I just asked a question about a place to leave a rental car in La Fortuna while we traveled to Monteverde via the taxi/boat/taxi. I’m now wondering if it would be possible to return the rental car in La Fortuna, go to Monteverde, and then rent another car when we return?
Would the car rental company that you work with (sorry, I forgot the name!) do something like that in La Fortuna?

    1. Hi Joan, Yes, we would recommend what you just suggested: renting one car for your initial time in La Fortuna, then making a separate, second reservation for the later dates. You can just make the reservations through Adobe Rent a Car using the widget on our website, doing the two reservations separately.

It is fairly easy to get around Monteverde without a car. Often, tours include transportation or it is available for a small charge. Taxis are relatively affordable too from most hotels in the area. If you’re staying near Santa Elena, you will be near restaurants and other amenities. There’s also a shuttle that runs a few times a day for a few dollars a trip that you could ask your hotel about.

Drinking water is fine in most of the country, including La Fortuna and Monteverde. We wouldn’t drink water from spigots at national parks, though, just in case. Better to bring as much as you will need for your hike. Food is safe here, just wash and prepare as you normally would at home.

  13. Thanks SO much for your helpful information, both for the above questions, and on your website. It really helps to have inside information from a veteran:)
This will be our first trip, and we are really looking forward to it!

  14. Hi, I am doing a solo trip to Costa Rica at the end of August. Two questions – is it possible to do a day trip to Monteverde from La Fortuna or do you recommend staying the night near Monteverde before moving on to Manuel Antonio? Second question – if I want to hike the volcano without a tour is that easy to do from any of the resorts or do you suggest I stay in a hotel closer to it? Thank you!

    1. Hi Meghan, We recommend at least an overnight in Monteverde so, yes, a night there before Manuel Antonio would be good. If you don’t want to do a guided tour, it would be easiest to pick a hotel closer to the volcano, like the Arenal Observatory. Taxi fare from many hotels is quite high because the volcano is a good distance from town.

      1. Thank you! Okay I think I will spend 1-2 nights in Monteverde. The other issue I am running into is I am tied to the bus schedule (looking at interbus CR) which isn’t too much of an issue for Monteverde or Manuel Antonio but I will lose a day getting to La Fortuna as they only leave at 2pm from San Jose. Have you ever used any of the airport shuttles through the hotels/resorts in La Fortuna? I land on a Saturday night and would prefer to go straight to LF or leave in the morning on Sunday.

  15. Hi, we’re traveling with three families (7 kids ages 9 -12) to Costa Rica in February. We won’t have a rental car so would like to be fairly close to town. We have two questions!
    1. Would you recommend Hotel Arenal Manoa or Tifakara Boutique Hotel? (2 nights)
    2. We will be spending a few days after Arenal at the beach in the Guanacaste area. On our last day, we’re driving to Liberia (because we have an 8 am flight). If our kids don’t see enough animals/wildlife in Arenal, would you recommend driving either to Palo Verde National Park or going to Rincon on our way to Liberia?
    Thanks so much!

    1. Hi Lauren, 1. Tifikara is nice and closer to town, but Arenal Manoa has better facilities with a few hot springs pools and a huge cool water pool with swim-up bar. We’d go with Arenal Manoa. 2. You can see a lot of wildlife at either Palo Verde or Rincon so it depends on if you want a boat tour or hiking tour. You could also stop at Las Pumas Rescue Center to see a lot of wildlife close up, guaranteed. Hope that helps!

  16. Where would you recommend for a solo traveler to stay who enjoys hiking and nature more than the city life? I want to spend my time in nature, hiking. Possibly take one night in the city for dinner, but other than that I would use the hotel and do hikes nearby. Not planning on renting a car, just use shuttle services. Spending 3 nights in La Fortuna with 2 full days. Debating on a day trip to Monteverde. Then I’m heading down south to San Manuel Antonio for another 3 nights and 2 full days.

  17. Hi! We’re a group of 5 (4 adults and a 2 year old) flying to CR (San Jose) in April from the 27- May 1. We want to see the volcano and beaches. We were thinking of either Baldi or The Springs for 2 days. What do you think of those two options?

Also, which beach do you recommend we visit for the remainder of the trip before heading back to San Jose to depart?

      1. Thanks! The Springs does not have the three rooms available that we want so we were checking out The Royal Corin Thermal Water Spa and Resort. Do you recommend it or we should just get the rooms available at the Springs?

  18. Great info guys. We are a couple reaching San Jose on Thursday late night and travel to La Fortuna same time. Could you give me some shuttle recommendations to go from San Jose to our hotel in La Fortuna or would you recommend getting it booked through the hotel? Appreciate your help

  19. Hello! I stumbled upon this page and I am so thankful. I am having a hard time making a decision and thought you could help. I am arriving 1 day earlier than my group, flying into San Jose at 1:30. I will have 3 kids age 12-14 with me. I am planning to drive to Arenal area to stay the night. Thinking we could do the hot springs that evening and then wake up and do a hike around/ see the volcano. I know many will think this is crazy but I am ok with that. It’s my only opportunity to see this part as we have already committed to a villa for 1 week in Manuel Antonio. We currently have 3 hotels booked but can’t decide as they all have their pluses and minuses! What would you do?

    1. Tabacon
    2. Arenal Observatory Lodge
    3. Silencio del Campo

Tabacon has the best hot springs but are they better for adults especially when most of the time there will be spent at night?

AOL has the included morning hike so I would be set there but there are no springs so I’d have to add on springs somewhere- not sure it would be worth the $300 for the few hours we’d have at Tabacon if I did a day pass. I could consider going to Baldi springs but others seem to think they aren’t very “natural” and seem a bit waterpark-ish.

Silencio seems the best all around AND has their own springs even tho they are small.

    I would LOVE your feedback!

  20. Hi. We are looking to travel to CR for the first time in August 2020. We are a family of 5 (2 adults, 3 children ages 11, 12 and 15 on the travel dates)….we are looking to stay in La Fortuna/Arenal for a few nights and then head to Manuel Antonio for a few more nights. We need larger rooms/suites for our large family. We are looking for modern amenities and conveniences but not necessarily a luxury resort (unless we can get a great deal in Aug?). Any suggestions? Thank you so much.

    1. Hi Lauren, It’s hard to find hotels that will allow 5 people in a room. Some places do have suites but it really varies by destination. It’s hard for us to give specific recommendations without know your exact travel dates and more about exactly what you’re looking for. Off the top of our heads, El Silencio del Campo has a larger family room, Arenal Springs Resort will allow 5 people in a room, and in Manuel Antonio, you could do connecting rooms at Costa Verde. Hope that helps! If you’d like help figuring out lodging and also with the other aspects of your trip, feel free to contact us through our Custom Itinerary Service.

  21. Hi, I found your page in my Costa Rica travel research. We have a company-paid trip coming up in April, which will be 5 days in a resort near Playa Conchal, on the Nicoya peninsula. We will fly in/out of Liberia. We would like to add on 3 or 4 days prior to the resort stay (truthfully, we are not resort people) to do our own thing. Prefer a contrast to the beach vacation that the resort experience will be. Looking at La Fortuna/Arenal. Would you recommend a shuttle from Liberia or renting a car? Wondering about accommodation as well. Would like to be near local eateries/bars/etc. to experience the place since we will have so much time at a resort already. Interested in El Silencio or a similar place/similar vibe. But it seems most of those places are out of town quite a ways. Is it easy to get into town from El Silencio or other? Would we definitely need a car? Are the taxis affordable to and from the town? Or would it be better to stay in town/walking distance to town? Is Rancho Cerro Azul within walking distance of town? Seems like it might have a similar vibe. Thanks in advance for your help!

    1. Hi Kirsten, La Fortuna sounds like it would be a good fit for you. Most of the hotels in downtown La Fortuna are budget options. Monte Real is a good one since it is in a quieter location. If you stayed farther out like at El Silencio del Campo, which we highly recommend, you would still be only 10 minutes or so from town and could easily take taxis to get around. Rancho Cerro Azul is a little closer to town than El Silencio and very close to La Fortuna Waterfall. If you need help arranging a shuttle to get from Liberia to La Fortuna, feel free to contact us through our Shuttle Booking page.

  22. We are traveling to the area in March and will have a car We have two teen girls 15 and 19 who need thing to do or they will just sit around. What are your thoughts on staying 3 nights at Heliconias? Or are there better options. Not really concerned with price and we know we dont want a giant resort feel.

    1. Hi Steve, Heliconias is a lovely hotel but a little bit far out so you may be better off with your daughters staying closer to downtown La Fortuna where there is more going on. Maybe El Silencio del Campo would be a good option? It’s family owned and doesn’t have a big resort feel and is just a short drive to the downtown and other activities.

  23. We will be traveling to Costa Rica at the end of May and will be in Arenal/La Fortuna area for 3 nights. We have 9 family members with us including a 12 year old, 15 year old, couple of 18 year olds and our twenty-something college kids. Looking for the price range of El Silencio del Campo, or can do a little more than that. We will need 3 rooms. We can’t decide between Hotel El Silencio, Paradise Hot Springs Hotel, or something like Arenal Springs. We will be coming in on a Sunday afternoon and have no activities planned that day. We’d like to do Hanging Bridges Tour and Ziplining either MOnday or Tuesday, and another excursion the other day we are there. Maybe some kind of rappelling adventure? My husband and I did a great trip rappelling down waterfalls and cliff jumping a couple years ago, but that particular one has an age requirement that is older than my 12 year old. So looking for best hotel options for our family, including your recommendations of the 3 I mentioned previously, and excursion recommends as well. This is a once in a lifetime trip for our kids and want to make it the best! We will be staying in an airbnb in Manuel Antonio second half of our trip. Much appreciated!

    1. Hi Allison, We have some time in our schedule right now to help with specific recommendations for all this if you’d like. I think we could do it through our Tour Booking Service. If you’re interested, please just fill out the form on the tour booking service page and we can send you more information on how we can help by email.

  24. I am so glad I found your site! It has been very helpful in planning our trip there in late July (keeping fingers crossed!) Wondering what you think of Hotel Roca Negra del Arenal? It gets really good reviews, and seems to have everything we need. We are low-frills travelers, but like to have onsite breakfast to save time and money, and a refrigerator in the room to store food for snacks and lunch.

    1. Hi Carrie, We haven’t stayed at La Roca Negra ourselves but it looks like a great practical option. It’s close to town and looks comfortable. We’d say to go for it. We really hope you can travel here in July. Here’s a link to our post about the current travel situation if you want to follow what has been happening in Costa Rica.

      1. Your travel situation post is much appreciated. I will continue to check it, and stick with making reservations only if there is a generous cancellation policy.

    1. Hi Catherine, We haven’t stayed at Los Lagos ourselves or sent any clients there yet, but have heard positive things about it. It’s a mid-size hotel in a good location not far from downtown La Fortuna and has a nice volcano view. It looks like they also have hot springs on site, which is convenient.

  25. We will be in Costa Rica next month, and I’m having such a hard time deciding where to stay in La Fortuna. We are 2 adults and 2 children ages 9 and 11. We will have a car. We have a total of 4 nights, and at least 1 of those nights will be Tabacon. AC is a must, and I’d love epic volcano views from the room and/or resort. I keep looking at options and Lost Iguana stands out to me. The Springs looks amazing, and while it is more than I’d like to spend (especially with the upcharge for the kids), we could make it work, if it’s worth the price tag. But only for 2 nights, definitely not 3 nights there. So I also don’t know if we should do 2 nights Tabacon, 2 nights other resort or 1 night Tabacon, 3 nights other resort. Or should I just book the 4 nights at Tabacon? I really appreciate any help! The amount of wonderful choices for everything is stressing me out haha!

    1. Hi Amber, You can’t really go wrong with those choices. But if you want awesome volcano views, you should add a hotel in addition to Tabacon. The Springs has really nice views and is worth it in general, in our opinion. It’s also good with kids since it has the wildlife sanctuary and Club Rio with some activities onsite. Hope that helps!

  26. Hi Amber, we are traveling with our 4 month old for the first time and trying to decide on a hotel in La Fortuna for four nights. We will have a rental car. We like a more nature feel but hot springs are also a plus. We plan on doing day trips to the volcano, swinging bridge, and Rio Celeste. Ideally we would like a restaurant on site or walking distance. Any hotel suggests? We are overwhelmed with the options!

  27. Hi Jen and Matt, we will be in La Fortuna the 17th – 21st and have been trying to decide between hotels. I want two rooms (or two bedrooms if possible) and have gone between Tifakara, Mountain Paradise Wellness Spa & Resort and am open to options. We are driving (I’m bringing three teenagers 16+ yrs and they would love the volcanos, nature and we will be doing tours (not booked yet).

    1. Hi Rebecca, We don’t know much about Mountain Paradise Resort. Tifakara is nice but it’s small. If you want a little more going on for the teenagers, somewhere like Arenal Manoa may be a good option since they have a big pool and it’s a mid size hotel so it has a somewhat busier feel.

  28. For bird watchers and all other nature-lovers my advice for those going to the La Fortuna/Arenal area, my experience as a retiree living in CR is that Arenal Observatory is your best hotel for the most nature experiences on property and by far the most birds. Book early because they are often full during “high season” if that is back yet. 🙂

  29. Hi Folks! I have just booked Tifakara for my husband and I Feb 2022, is there anywhere we can experience the hot springs? Any other suggestions would be very welcome. We have 8 days there and a car. 🙂

    1. Ecotermales is a really nice option for hot springs. It’s smaller (but not too small) and limits the number of people who can go. Here’s a link to our article about Ecotermales, with a video so you can get a feel for it.

There’s also Tabacon. That’s probably the most well known hot springs resort in the area. It has more hot springs pools. Most are smaller, whereas Ecotermales has a handful of large ones.

  30. Hi, looking to spend 1 night at a mid-range hotel with private hot springs. Since it’s only one night, not that concerned about the other amenities as we are looking to take advantage of the springs and then head into town for dinner.

Kioro and Arenal Springs both currently work for my dates but open to other suggestions if you have any favorites based on how you enjoyed the on-site springs. Some reviews suggest the Kioro springs aren’t that hot which would be disappointing if that’s the case.

  31. Hi, looking to plan a stay soon and looking for a resort/hotel with private springs.

Out of the mid-range Hotels in La Fortuna – are there any hotels you’d highly recommend and/or suggest to look else where based on just the springs they have on site? Looking a variety in terms of temperature as some in the family like warm while others prefer very hot springs.

Right now looking at both the Arenal Springs Resort & Spa as well as the Kioro Resort Suites and Spa – but also open to other suggestions.

    1. Hi Nima, Arenal Springs Resort is probably your best mid-range option because it has the most elaborate hot springs of the options we give. Their pools range from 93-104 F (I think they have about four big hot springs pools).

  32. Hi Jenn and Matt, Love your website and all of the insider info! We are 2 families – 11 people total and all of the kids are teenagers to young adults. We are headed to CR in July with first 4 nights in the Arenal region and then headed to Tamarindo for the last 4 nights. We are currently getting assistance with itineraries through anywhere.com – do you know this company? The proposed lodging in La Fortuna is between Arenal Springs and Los Lagos. What are your thoughts between these 2 properties? There is a significant difference in price b/t the 2 and want to make sure it is worth it to stay at Arenal Springs. If it is…is there anywhere else in same price point you think would be better than Arenal Springs? Thank you!

    1. Hi Julie, Just getting to your comment now. It was great talking to you through our video chat service. Hope you were able to pick a hotel without too much trouble. Thanks!

  33. We stayed at the beautiful Noahs forest hotel just 1km from La Fortuna. The bungalows were clean, well decorated, spacious and the beds were soooo comfortable. They didn’t have hot springs or a perfect view of the volcano, but the staff was so accommodating and friendly and basically planned our stay according to our requests. 10/10 recommend!

  34. Hi!

I am loving all the information you have been sharing on Costa Rica. I am going with my boyfriend in December. We are wondering if you have heard of Hotel Magic Mountain and have any reviews on this hotel. Thank you!

    1. Hi Sabrina, Many people like Hotel Magic Mountain. It’s a fine mid-range hotel. It wouldn’t be our first choice overall but is priced well for a hotel with volcano views and a pool. Hope that helps!

  35. hello…my daughter and I will be at Nayara gardens from 31st october thru Nov 2nd. Looking for a hotel close to town from 10/29 to 10/31. Couldnt do Nayara those dates as it was very pricey on the weekend. We’d like to try the temazcal and also waterfalls. What would you suggest? Also we are arriving in Liberia and the hotel shuttles seem to very expensive. Is there a private service that you could suggest thats reliable and not so expensive? Thank you!

    1. Hi Manu, The hotels close to town are mostly budget, but there are a few mid-range options if that’s what you’re looking for. Noah’s Forest is a nice hotel near the center of town but in a quieter location. Or Tifakara Boutique Hotel is about a 5 minute drive from town on the other side and close to La Fortuna Waterfall.

For shuttles, the companies that we work with charge $174 plus tax for LIR Airport to La Fortuna. This is total for the 2 of you. Keep in mind that it’s about a 2.5 hour drive from Liberia. If you’re interested in booking this, here is the link to the page on our site.

      1. Thanks for the info … we will definitely look into the shuttle service. One more question please …. Tanavon seems to have discontinued the temazcal service as of now . Would you happen to know of another place that offers it ? Also possibly ayahuasca. Somewhere safe …..

  36. Hi there! Thanks so much for all of your information on your website. Any recommendation for a group of 5 adults to stay near Arenal? Would need 3 bedrooms, so private rooms would probably be our best bet. Looking for around $100-$150 a night. Heliconias looks definitely up our alley. The observatory also looks awesome, but it’s already sold out on one of our dates for next spring! We’re low key travelers, hence the budget, but also we’re like 40 years old so some of us would prefer something above a hostel. (Not me, I love the fun environment of a hostel, lol.)

      1. Hi there, I’m currently deciding between Los Lagos and Tifikara. I’m a solo male traveler that will be doing adventurous tours during the day. Both of these hotels look interesting and seem to have their pros/cons. I’m wondering if Tifikara is worth the additional price tag too. Any advice?

        1. Hi Aaron, Tifakara is a little nicer and more updatedm but Los Lagos is fine too. It depends on the experience you’re looking for. Los Lagos is more set off on its own, while Tifakara is closer to restaurants and La Fortuna Waterfall.

  37. Hello! I love your website, it is so helpful. We are going to La Fortuna at the end of April. Will it rain a lot in La Fortuna ?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Grace, La Fortuna has different weather patterns from the rest of Costa Rica. It gets rain year-round but April is not one of the rainiest months by any means. You’ll likely have a good amount of sun with rain occasionally.

  38. Hello Jenn and Matt! So happy I came across your website.

We will be in CR in September- arriving in SJO late night (11pm), planning five days at Tabacon and then traveling to Guanacaste to spend five days at El Mangroove. We’ll make the trip back home from from Liberia airport. My question- what is the best way to commute from La Fortuna to Guanacaste? Does Tabacon offer late night shuttle from airport to resort?

    1. Hi Linda, You could organize your shuttle through Tabacon probably, yes. We also do shuttle bookings. Here’s a link to the shuttle from La Fortuna to Playa Hermosa, near El Mangroove. If you’d like us to book it for you just fill out the form on our site and we’ll get back to you by email. Thanks!

  39. Hi! What are your thoughts on traveling to Costa Rica Easter week? It’s always our spring break so we’re limited with our calendar. We were hoping to do La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio – will it be so busy that we don’t enjoy our time?

I’m already finding hotels very limited. La Fortuna has Chachagua, Noah’s Forrest, Tifakara, and La Finca. Any thoughts on these choices?

Lastly, what do you think about using AirBNBs for Manual Antonio?

    1. Hi Katie, Easter week is peak season, so yes, it will be busy. We haven’t gotten any complaints from clients we’ve helped who have visited during this time, though. As long as you’re careful with choosing accommodations and go with tour operators that don’t take huge groups, it should be fine. I would try to stay at smaller hotels or Airbnbs not right in the middle of everything. Chachagua and La Finca are both in a nice quiet locations but a decent drive from downtown La Fortuna. Tikakara and Noah’s Forest are in a good location close to town.

Airbnbs are a good option for Manuel Antonio if you can’t find any hotels. Here’s a link to our post with tips on what to look for in vacation rentals in Costa Rica.

  40. Hi! Have a question – for Heliconias Lodge, the link takes you to Heliconias Nature Inn & Springs. I thought maybe they were the same thing, but looking into it further it seems they are different establishments?

  41. In my opinion, there is no competition for Arenal Observatory Lodge as the best place to stay for nature lovers. More forest, more wildlife, more trails, the best waterfall, the best guides, and of course the best view of the volcano! 🙂 And oh yeah, their restaurant is good and reasonably priced in my opinion.

  42. My wife & I stayed at Arenal Glamping in Jan. 2024 and loved it! Small 10 room resort with restaurant for breakfast, yoga studio, great swimming pool, workout area and view of the Volcano.
